This Holiday Season: Text your child to start the conversation about underage drinking prevention

Texting is a popular way for teens and parents to communicate.

Use or adapt the following sample text messages to start the conversation and keep it going year-round. 1. Be careful tonight, if your friends offer you a drink, just say no. 2. Have fun tonight!

Keep your curfew in mind.

Call me if you need anything.

Resisting peer pressure is tough, but you can do whatever you set your mind to.

Remember your promise to us. Be safe tonight. Love you.

Remember our discussion about underage drinking. We love you too much to see anything bad happen to you.

Parents, remember to:

Connect: Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.

Communicate: Choose everyday opportunities to have small talks, such as in the car, texting,

or during dinner time.

Commit: Create clear and consistent family rules together & express why underage drinking is unacceptable.
